Forest Camp is a week of nature connection and immersion with Wild Kin. It is an exploration and appreciation of all things Summer in Simi Valley. What plants feel the most present in Summer? Who has their leaves? Who doesn’t? What bugs do we keep seeing over and over? What handcrafts can we do with the plants of Summer? Expect songs, games, stories, crafts, adventures, and lots of play! Like our school year program, the Forest Camp curriculum is emergent and responsive to the needs and interests of our unique group. Learn more about our school and curriculum here.

forest camp FAQ

  • Forest Camp is a shorter version of our year long forest school. You can learn more about our school here.

Children will spend these days engaged with the plants and animals of Summer, playing nature themed games, wildcrafting, exploring, and relaxing in the shade while listening to a good story.

  • Forest Camp takes place in the wild spaces and trails of East Simi Valley.

Due to the unpredictability of weather, we send out precise locations as the camp approaches. We may need more shade, or perhaps water to play in, or maybe even cover for rain! Our locations shift accordingly.

Feel free to email us and we can give you a list of possible trails we will be at!

  • Forest Camp is $300 if you sign up by May 1st, and $400 after May 1st.

Full payment is required to secure your child’s place, you can use the links below to pay.

A signed liability waiver is required to participate in Forest Camp and will be e-mailed to you upon sign up.

  • Our Young Explorers Camp is for ages 3-5

Our Trailblazers Camp is for ages 5-9

  • Both of our camps offer seasonal nature immersion with our skilled teachers. The difference is simply that the Trailblazers Camp may embark on longer more strenuous hikes that require more stamina, and engage in tool use and crafting that requires more advanced motor skills.

Your 5 year old may very well enjoy both camps! Feel free to email us to discuss your child’s unique needs.

  • Our ratio for the Young Explorers is 1:4

Our ratio for the Trailblazers is 1:6

  • You child’s physical and emotional safety is our main priority. Kat and Lindsay are both thoroughly trained by three different forest school training programs, maintain CPR and First Aid certifications, and were background checked by sister school EverwildLA.

Basecamps are checked for hazards by our teachers. This includes taking note of any poisonous plants, checking for snakes, trash, and any other hazardous conditions.

Our teachers maintain a strong working knowledge of poisonous plants, animals and hazardous conditions outdoors.

We monitor and manage risks, such as climbing, or rough and tumble play between children for physical and emotional safety.

We are constantly engaged in professional development as naturalists and as early childhood professionals. We are passionate about this work and want to provide the safest environment possible for children to be free to move and play.

  • Children must come prepared to each camp day with all items in the required list. Having the proper gear will support your child in being comfortable and prepared for all weather and terrain conditions.

Required: Proper fitting backpack (over both shoulders), 2 Water bottles, (one can be frozen), lunch & snack, Change of clothes, Sunscreen (applied before drop off & packed in backpack), Weather appropriate clothes. Diapers and wipes if needed.

Breathable cotton and a sun hat with strap are recommended. Ice pack in lunch box to keep food fresh.

Optional: Bandana, Journal and Pencil/Pen/Colored Pencils, Personal First Aid Kit (Bandaids/antibacterial cream), Tools for exploring (Binoculars, compass, bird whistle, magnifying glass, bug catcher, catch and release container.

What not to pack: We ask that you do not pack toys or electronic devices. We are focused on creating meaningful experiences in nature and find that toys and screens can take children out of the experience.

  • Wild Kin’s leaders are educators, naturalists, adventurers, and mothers. Meet us here.

All our teachers are CPR/First Aid certified and background checked.

The Young Explorers camp is lead by Founders Kat and Lindsay who are educated in early childhood development, trained by the Academy of Forest Kindergarten Teachers as well as Wilderness Awareness School’s Coyote Mentoring, and have received years of on the ground forest school teaching experience at sister forest school EverWild LA.

The Trailblazers Camp is lead by Kat, Lindsay, and our newest teacher Desere, who is a mother of 4 as well as an educator with a Bachelor's in Civil and Environmental Engineering from UCLA and Masters in Education from UC Irvine.
